Automatic hardness testers are designed for series production, where hardness has to be checked quickly, consistently and without operator influence – often on every part. The CISAM-Ernst AT350 automates Rockwell testing of large parts and Jominy tests. The TWIN-X is integrated into production lines, and Bre-Aut lines are engineered for series Brinell testing of the customer's product. The Foerster SONODUR R is a UCI instrument that can be connected to an automated line and sorting equipment. We select the solution together with the manufacturer based on the part, the method and the required throughput.

Benchtop hardness testers are designed for everyday testing in production and the laboratory. The CISAM-Ernst AT130 and AT250 measure Rockwell, Super Rockwell and Brinell hardness; their spring-loaded test system eliminates the effect of part deflection. The NR3-D is a benchtop Rockwell tester for laboratories and training. The MTR-X is designed for Esatest® low-load measurements in hard-to-reach places such as gears and weld zones.

CHD (Case Hardening Depth) is the depth of a carburised or hardened layer and an important quality indicator for heat-treated parts. It is usually determined by cutting the part and measuring microhardness on a section. CISAM-Ernst HTD30, HTD1500 and HTD4000 analyzers determine the layer depth without cutting, mounting or polishing the part. The part remains intact, so more items can be checked and results are available sooner.

Software determines how quickly and reliably hardness tests are carried out and how their results are managed. QATM Qpix T2 is designed for testers with an integrated touchscreen and simplifies series testing and documentation. Qpix Control2 controls automatic testers: test series can be planned directly on the sample image. Qpix Control2 M/R standardises work across several different QATM testers, and QAI uses artificial intelligence to evaluate hard-to-see indentations.

Brinell hardness is determined from the indentation diameter, so the accuracy of the result depends heavily on how the indentation is measured. Optical readers measure the indentation automatically and reduce operator influence. The QATM Qmobile EVO is a portable device for evaluating indentations on site, for example in foundries and forges. The CISAM-Ernst e-brio-w is a stand-alone wireless reader with a camera, and the Altair 20x is an optical indentation reader.

Microhardness testers are used when testing with low loads is required: thin layers, small parts, case hardening depth (CHD/NHD/SHD) or weld zones. The QATM Qness 10 and 60 are available in three levels. The M version is semi-automatic with manual sample positioning. The A+ version automatically runs test series on several samples. The 60 A+ EVO is a top-of-the-range fully automatic instrument for unattended operation.

Portable hardness testers let you test directly on the part – in the workshop, warehouse or on site, when the item cannot be brought to the laboratory. The UCI method suits thin, small and complex parts, welds and heat-treated surfaces. The Leeb method suits massive parts, castings and forgings. We offer Foerster SONODUR, NOVOTEST UCI and Leeb testers, as well as CISAM-Ernst portable Rockwell, Brinell and Esatest® instruments. We select the method and instrument based on the part's weight, shape, surface and the required documentation.

The Rockwell method is the fastest and most widely used hardness test in production: the result is obtained directly from the indentation depth, without optical measurement. The QATM Qness 150 CS (ECO) is a compact instrument for standard and superficial Rockwell testing. The Qness 150 CSA+ has an automatic XY stage for series testing. The Qness 60 / 150 RCS is designed for fast 100% inspection in production and heat treatment lines.

Universal hardness testers perform several methods – Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell and Knoop – in a single instrument over a wide load range. The QATM Qness 200 CS is a compact instrument for small and medium-sized parts. The Qness 250 / 750 / 3000 EVO series is designed for foundries, forges and heat treatment companies: C / CS versions for small samples, the E version for large and heavy parts, and A+ for fully automatic testing without an operator.
